Why Do Muay Thai Fighters Have Weird or Funny Names (Muay Thai Fighter Names Explained)

If you are new to Muay Thai, fighter names can seem strange, random, or even funny at first.

Names like Superlek Kiatmoo9, Petchboonchu FA Group, or Buakaw Banchamek do not follow the same format as most English names.

But Muay Thai fighter names usually make more sense once you know how they work.

In most cases, a Muay Thai fighter name is made up of 2 parts:

[Ring Name] + [Gym or Sponsor Name]

1. The First Part Is Usually a Ring Name (Like a Stage Name)

This is similar to how musicians, rappers, or entertainers sometimes use a stage name instead of their legal name.

The name may be:

  • A nickname
  • Given by family or trainers
  • Chosen because it sounds strong
  • Based on personality or fighting style
  • Selected to sound memorable or lucky

Many Thai ring names are also created from common Thai words with positive meanings.

Instead of traditional first names, they often use words connected to:

  • Strength
  • Success
  • Luck
  • Speed
  • Honour
  • Royal or prestigious ideas
  • Nature
  • Valuable objects

That is why certain words appear repeatedly across Muay Thai.

Examples:

  • Yod → top, summit, excellent
  • Petch → diamond
  • Petch Noi → little diamond
  • Thong → gold
  • Sing → lion
  • Chai → victory
  • Rung → rise, shine, success
  • Kla → brave
  • Boon → blessing, merit
  • Buakaw → white lotus

Examples in real fighter names:

  • Yodlekpet → roughly “Top Little Diamond”
  • Petchmorakot → “Diamond Emerald”
  • Buakaw → “White Lotus”

To English speakers, these combinations can sound unusual because they are translated meanings rather than standard English-style names.

2. The Second Part Is Usually Their Gym Name or Sponsor

The second part of a Muay Thai fighter’s name is often the part that confuses people.

This section usually shows:

  • The gym they train at
  • A sponsor
  • Their fight camp
  • Sometimes a business or supporter connected to the fighter

This acts as a way to represent and show respect to the people supporting the fighter.

Examples:

  • Superlek Kiatmoo9
    → Superlek = ring name
    → Kiatmoo9 = gym
  • Buakaw Banchamek
    → Buakaw = ring name
    → Banchamek = camp/brand
  • Petchboonchu FA Group
    → Petchboonchu = ring name
    → FA Group = sponsor
  • Seksan Or Kwanmuang
    → Seksan = ring name
    → Or Kwanmuang = gym

Because fighters sometimes change gyms or sponsors, the second part of their name can change during their career.
